Maybelline Has Signed Their First Ever Asian Model As A Global Ambassador
Times are changing for the better, as Taiwanese model I-Hua Wu has been announced as the new global ambassador for Maybelline; she is the first model of Asian descent to represent the brand in a worldwide campaign.
Wu will be joining the likes of Christy Turlington, Jourdan Dunn and Tanzanian model Herieth Paul.
“Outside of the U.S. there are few Taiwanese models. It’s mostly models from other Asian countries,” the stunning Wu told The Cut.
“But lots of Taiwanese models come here and work hard, but have never been recognised because Taiwan is so small. I’m happy to shine some light on it.”
It’s an encouraging move as Maybelline diversifies its representation, in accordance with the brand expanding their shade ranges to incorporate a greater scope of skin tones. While giving their Asian market a truer reflection of the people that buy Maybelline products.
Wu said that modelling has changed how she sees Asian beauty standards, saying:
“A lot of Taiwanese girls are slowly letting go of giving themselves the pressure to conform to a certain type of beauty. You can’t give yourself such strict definitions of what is beautiful.”
It’s important to note however that we are still only making baby steps at this stage in terms of model diversity and widening perceptions of beauty, for the 2016 Spring Fashion weeks across New York, London, Paris and Milan, Asian models merely made up a maximum of 9 percent of the runway, with white models dominating over 80 percent of the fashion shows.
