After 26 seasons and 35 years of marriage, Homer and Marge Simpson will be “legally separating” in season 27.

Executive producer Al Jean revealed the plot in Variety magazine saying, “In the premiere, it’s discovered after all the years Homer has narcolepsy…And it’s an incredible strain on the marriage. Homer and Marge legally separate.”

According to Jean, Homer falls in love with a new, local pharmacist who will be voiced by ‘Girls’ star Lena Dunham.

As well as the separation, it has also been revealed that season 27 will have plenty of other story lines that will shake things up. Last weekend, Jean told ATX Television Festival attendees that Bart will be killed by Sideshow Bob on a Treehouse of Horror Halloween special.

After almost three decades, it seems that the show’s creators are becoming increasingly desperate for new content. This move will surely upset a lot of the long-time fans of the show.

Let’s face it though… The Simpsons has sucked ever since the movie came out in 2007.

UPDATE: Despite Al Jean’s comments, the Simpsons official Facebook page has weighed in with the below post claiming the famous duo will not ‘break up‘. We’ll leave it with you to read in to it as you like:
