Instead of kicking-off The Daily Show with his standard joke routine, Jon Stewart used his opening monologue to take aim at the media and the public reaction to last week’s Charleston Church massacre, which killed 9 people.

Regularly proving that he is one of the most influential people on US television, Stewart took aim at the “depraved violence that we (Americans) do to each other in the nexus of a gaping racial wound that will not heal yet we pretend doesn’t exist”, and suggested that there are still several barriers standing in the way of racial equality.
