Archive 81 is a new Netflix series that will truly scare your socks off.

The show is inspired by a popular podcast of the same name and follows Dan (played by Mamoudou Athie), an archivist tasked with restoring a mysterious bunch of damaged videotapes. Dan is paid an exorbitant amount of money to fix and watch the tapes in an isolated cabin in the woods — and of course, from the get-go, spooky stuff starts to happen.

Dan discovers that the videos’ filmmaker, Melody (Dina Shihabi), had been making a documentary about the occupants of a creepy apartment building called the Visser when a fire destroyed the complex in 1994. To add to the mystery, the Visser building was built on the grounds of a mansion which also burnt down.

Things get extra creepy as Dan continues to watch the tapes and realises that a cult was practicing in the building, and the lines between the past and present start to blur through watching Melody’s footage. It sounds rather confusing (and at times, it definitely requires the viewer to suspend belief) but it’s a captivating show from start to finish.

The horror podcast adaption is completely original, in a genre not always known for its originality, and Athie and Shihabi’s commanding performances carry the show. Archive 81 is sitting in the top 10 of Australian Netflix and has been getting rave reviews among critics. The eight-episode series has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 88% and being herald as the “first binge-worthy horror series of 2022.” I mean, I know we’re only a few weeks into 2022, but still! It’s a very good series!

But at the same time, the show is still absolutely bonkers. From the cult vibes, the spooky tapes, and time-jumps, Archive 81 has fans simultaneously hooked and horrified. And yes, the memes are perfection.
